David Dubinsky, president of the International Ladies' Garment Workers Union, and David Sarnoff, chairman of the Board of the Radio Corporation of America, have been appointed honorary co-chairmen of the Equal Opportunity Day Committee, it had been announced this week.
Equal Opportunity Day (EOD) is an annual event sponsored by the National Urban League and its 63 local affiliates on November 19th, the anniversary of Lincoln's Gettysburg Address. The purpose of EOD is to focus national attention on the American ideal of equal opportunity for all, regardless of race, color, or creed.
More than 300 committeemen from labor, business and the community will serve under Mr. Dubinsky's and Mr. Sarnoff's leadership. Committee members include: George Baldanzi, international president, United Textile Workers of America; Harry Van Arsdale, president, Central Trades and Labor Council of Greater New York; William H. Oliver, international representative, United Auto Workers; Louis Simon, vice-president, Amalgamated Clothing Workers of America; Boyd L. Wilson, international representative, United Steelworkers; Thomas G. Young, vice-president, N. Y. State AFL-CIO Council; and, Charles S. Zimmerman, vice-president, International Ladies' Garment Workers Union.
Also serving on the committee will be Max Greenberg, president, Retail, Wholesale & Department Store Union; Boone Gross, president, Gillette Company; Carl H. Hageman, vice-president, Union Carbide Corporation; Ralph Helstein, president, United Packinghouse Workers of America; Saul Horowitz, president, H.R.H. Construction Corporation; Alfred A. Knopf, chairman of the Board, Alfred A. Knopf, Inc.; Morris Milgram, president, Modern Community Developers, Inc.; H. L. Mitchell, president, National Agricultural Workers Union; J. J. Morrow, vice-president, Pitney-Bowes, Inc.; James B. Nolan, executive director, Police Athletic League; Dr. Winfred Overholser, St. Elizabeth's Hospital; Mrs. Anna M. Rosenberg, New York City; Henry Steeger, chairman, Popular Publications; Dr. William R. Strassner, president, Shaw University; H. L. Titus, president, Carbon Black Export Company; and, Grover A. Whalen, New York City.
The national chairman of Equal Opportunity Day is Frederick W. Richmond, a New York industrialist and an Urban League board member.
The National Urban League is an interracial organization devoted to improving economic opportunities for Negroes and bettering race relationships in America. It was founded in 1910.
