The Athens Post has a pointed way of putting things square before its readers. Of the new assessment law, it says:
We are apprehensive, however, that the new assessment law will prove immensely unpopular; that it will soon stink in the public nostril; and that only the fewest number of those who voted for it will ever again enjoy the privilege of traveling between their respective homes and Nashville on the free pass system. The 'last plow, the last shovel, and the last hoe' we used to hear about in the days of Harris and Netherland, wasn't a priming to it. The blanks have hardly been out a week, and already the Comptroller has found it necessary to issue two or three explanatory cards. How many more the poor fellow—fresh from the plow handles—will have to print, it would be difficult just now to conjecture.
