New York (LPA)-During hearings on increasing the federal wage minimum from 40 cents to 75 cents, many employers testified they would be forced out of business. When the law was passed, they rushed to get exemptions, and applied for sub-minimum and "learner" rates.
The Daily News Record of New York City, a business men's paper, reports in its June 6 issue that salesmen returning from the south report the 75-cent minimum and favorable weather "have enabled much of the southeast and southwest to forge ahead of other sections in the matter of sustained business and new merchandise requirements."
They quoted one salesman as saying that section "looks more prosperous than any other in the country." Another said income had almost doubled, and "this in turn has found its way back into the retail market."
