THE LITTLE PLOT:

Considerable uneasiness has been felt during the present week, by a number of persons in this place, in consequence of the conduct of a few negroes. As matters of this kind are usually magnified at a distance, and even here on the spot, where the truth might be ascertained, we have already heard some marvellous stories on the subject, and we have on that account thought it necessary to notice the affair. The plot, if it deserves the name, was perfectly contemptible, both in numbers and means of mischief: and notwithstanding the many idle stories that have and will be circulated, there is no cause for alarm. It appears from the testimony of a free black fellow who made the discovery, that there had been some talk of arming themselves with knives, that when a large number of the militia was called out, they were to attack the town, and had proceeded to nominate a captain and other officers for their company. As it is proper that any disposition of this kind should be promptly put down, about eight, all who were named as concerned in the plot, were arrested and are now confined in jail.

A meeting of the citizens was called on Tuesday evening to determine what steps might be proper to be taken on the occasion. At this meeting a committee was appointed and directed to report to a meeting of the citizens on Thursday evening. To this second meeting the committee reported that after investigating the subject, they felt satisfied that there was no cause of alarm, and that the constables of the town were sufficient to secure its peace, without the aid of any additional guard or patrole.

As the county court does not sit again until February next, we understand application has been made to the governor and council for a special court for the trial of all implicated.
