Event Details
The schooner Thetis, under Captain Cotton, was lying at Manzanilla on the 9th of May when warned of an impending attack by three piratical boats. Preparations were made, including loading guns and enlisting four soldiers. At half past 11 at night, the boats approached with muffled oars, each carrying twelve men. After hailing without response, the supercargo fired a warning pistol, prompting musket fire from the pirates. The Thetis returned fire briskly for sixteen minutes, then used large guns to force the boats to retreat. The next morning, three dead pirates were found on the beach and five wounded were captured. On the 12th, a wrecked canoe with four dead bodies was discovered on the Keys.
