M.E. BISHOPS TO DISCUSS PEACE NEXT WEEK

Eighteen Bishops To Hold Conference In Minneapolis

National and international problems as well as those pertaining directly to the church will be considered when the eighteen bishops of the Methodist Episcopal church in America meet next week in Minneapolis for their semi-annual conference.

Peace and the present status of the liquor situation in the United States are among the questions scheduled for discussions along with a review of the life of the church. The meeting, which will open on Tuesday, May 4, and continue through Sunday, May 9, also will officially launch a year-long celebration in commemoration of the 200th anniversary of the Wesleyan or Methodist movement.

This anniversary observance will culminate next year when special services will be held on Sunday May 22, and Tuesday, May 24, at Aldersgate Street, London, where 200 years before John Wesley experienced the religious manifestation that led to the founding of the Methodist societies.

The Million Unit Fellowship Movement, now in progress for the invigorating of the spiritual life of the church and for the restoration of its missionary and benevolence finances, also will be prominent among the matters considered.

The movement is now about to enter its second year and each bishop attending, since each heads the movement in his area, will report on its progress, which already has begun to register in a more vigorous church life and increased giving.

First among the special features of the session will be a fifteen minute broadcast, between 12:30 and 12:45 o'clock Wednesday afternoon over the Columbia Broadcasting System.

Bishop Ernest Lynn Waldorf of Chicago, chairman of the Committee of Direction for the Million Unit Fellowship Movement, will speak. "Religion in a Changing World" will be his subject. He will be introduced by Bishop J. Ralph Magee of Minneapolis and the A Cappella Choir of the Hamline University will sing.

On the closing day of the conference, Sunday, May 9, ten thousand Methodists of the Minneapolis area are expected to attend an evening service in the Municipal Auditorium. Speakers who will interpret the relationship of religious faith and the church as an institution to the swiftly changing American scene will be Bishop Edwin Hughes of Washington, D. C., senior bishop of the church; Bishop Francis John McConnell of New York, and Bishop G. Bromley Oxnam of Omaha.
