The Administration
To Crack Down on Excessive Speeding

The Paiewonsky Administration today announced a concentrated crack-down aimed at speeders on St. Croix Highways. In particular, the Administration expressed its concern at continued reports of irresponsible operating of heavy trucks and buses on St. Croix Highways.

Following a meeting held this morning at Government House, Christiansted, between the Governor's Representative for St. Croix Ron de Lugo, and Assistant Commissioner of Public Safety, George A. Matthias, where plans were mapped to make the St. Croix Highways a safer place for all concerned, the Governor's Representative stated.

"This administration will not tolerate the continued abuse of our traffic laws shown by some operators. In particular, we are clamping down on the drivers of heavy trucks and buses. Irresponsible handling of these vehicles on our highways endangers the lives and well being of our citizens. At no time should a truck or a bus be operated at more than thirty miles an hour on our highways. Yet we are all aware that this has not been adhered to."

The Governor's Representative called on all citizens to cooperate in this campaign to make St. Croix Highways safe.

Commissioner Matthias, pointed to the laws regarding speeding and pledged that they would be vigorously enforced.

The law reads:

"494. Speed Limits

(a) Every person operating a motor vehicle upon a public street or highway shall drive such vehicle in a careful and prudent manner and at a rate of speed so as not to endanger the property of another or the life or limb of any person,

(b) The rate of speed for motorcars, pick-up trucks, or motorcycles shall not exceed 20 miles per hour within the town limits or 35 miles per hour on all public highways outside the town limits, except on Centerline road west of King's Hill in St. Croix, where the rate of speed shall not exceed 40 miles per hour.

(c) THE RATE OF SPEED FOR MOTOR TRUCKS OR BUSSES SHALL NOT EXCEED 10 MILES PER HOUR WITHIN THE TOWN LIMITS OR 30 MILES PER HOUR ON THE PUBLIC HIGHWAYS."

Commissioner Matthias urged owners of heavy trucks and buses to warn their drivers about observing the law and pledged that any one breaking the established speed limits would be prosecuted to the full extent of the law.
