Norfolk Ledger.
The following extract of a letter from one of the gentlemen who projected the expedition from Campbell county, noticed in our last, will shew the interest that is felt in the object of this little voyage of discovery, by persons more remote from the immediate scene of its utility. Assuredly then, the pleasing anticipations which are indulged by those at a distance, should be felt in a triplicate ratio by all friends to the welfare and prosperity of our Borough,--Norfolk Beacon.
EXTRACT.
"Edenton, N.C. Dec. 4., 1814.
I expected to be in Norfolk, on Friday last in our boat, as I advised you some time since; but the descent of the Roanoke was more tedious than was calculated upon; and as this is the day our legislature meets in Richmond, I am compelled to hurry on in the Stage to that place." I have accomplished the great object I had in view by coming to this place, or nearly so; the balance of the sound, and communication from it to Norfolk through the Dismal Swamp Canal, will be examined by the young gentleman who bear this, Mr. Benj. W. S. Cabell, Mr. Philip Paine, and perhaps Mr. Carter Harrison. Those gentlemen will deliver you a barrel of Flour, manufactured on Staunton River opposite the lower end of Long Island, which I wish presented to the corporation of Norfolk, as an earnest of a future trade in that article from the high land country, down the Roanoke to the Borough."
