HUNDREDS OF CANADIANS ARE TRAPPED: SPAIN'S REBELS GAIN
HENDaye, Franco-Spanish frontier, May 9. (UP).—Several hundred Canadian volunteers of the loyalist international brigades were reported last night to have been trapped and captured when parallel insurgent armies swept past them and on down the Mediterranean seacoast.

The motorized insurgent forces, composed of Castilians, Navarrese and Galicians, drove a double-pronged attack down the coast to within 25 miles of Castellon de La Plana.

Insurgent dispatches said General Miguel Aranda's forces were on the outskirts of Torreblanca, gateway to the "Desert of Palms" along the rolling road to Valencia, 64 miles away.

Aranda trapped the Canadian troops between Alcala de Chivert on the coastal road and Cuevas de Vinroma, 10 miles inland on another highway to Castellon.

The advancing insurgents abandoned the two main roads and converged along the rocky river bed of the Rambla de Segura three miles south of Cuevas de Vinroma, encircling two whole companies of the foreign brigades.

Of the 460 prisoners taken in the operation almost all were said to have been new Canadian volunteers recently brought up from a training camp at Cuenca and without previous battle experience.

As result of the drive on Torreblanca the insurgent hold on the coast was widened to a strip of 52 miles.

Insurgent officers said the sweep down the coast was purposely being retarded to permit other columns, operating inland between Morella and Aliga south of Castellote, to close a big pocket on thousands of loyalist mountain fighters near Cantavieja.
