WINCHESTER:
COLTON'S GENERAL ATLAS.
Mr. B. H. Lyon, agent for the sale of this valuable work, called to see us this week, and solicited a subscription, and we subscribed, feeling that we had already been too long in need of such a work. He also obtained the names of several of our most influential citizens.
This Atlas is undoubtedly the most complete we have ever seen. It contains 110 sheets, on which are exhibited 180 maps, and plans of every state, nation, country, kingdom and island on the globe.
The sum of $80,000 has been expended, we understand, in getting it up. In addition to the maps, it contains a detailed description of all countries, with geographical and statistical information in regard to each, thus combining in one volume the Atlas and Gazetteer.
J. H. Colton is said to be unquestionably the most reliable map-maker in this country, and in this effort he has succeeded wonderfully, and we hope his labors will be rewarded by a tremendous sale of a work that is indispensable to every man who has a family to educate, who reads a newspaper, or desires to keep pace with the times.
The New York Day Book, (a good paper well known to many of our citizens) speaks in very high eulogy of this Atlas. So does the New Orleans Delta, the Charleston (S. C.) Courier, New Orleans Picayune, Louisville Journal, Mobile News, Boston Atlas, and many other leading Journals we might name, besides the most eminent divines, professors, and public men of the country.
Such a work we can conscientiously recommend to every one.
