Rise Four Per Cent
Job placements in May in the state of Ohio increased for the third consecutive month, according to Dale Dunifon, administrator of the Ohio bureau of unemployment compensation, in his report to Governor Thomas J. Herbert. Rising four per cent over April, the placements reached a total of 27,805.
The domestic services, metal manufacturing industries, and interstate railroads accounted for nearly all of the increase in placements. Increases were greatest in the unskilled and service occupations with a slight rise in placement of skilled workers.
A jump of 12 per cent in jobs filled by youths under 21 years of age was reported by Dunifon, but two groups decreased in placements despite the over-all rise. Hires of women fell four per cent from April and the placement of handicapped persons reduced six per cent.
For the first time in four months, Dunifon reported, available jobs showed a decline, decreasing over 1000 in May to a total of 59,227. Unfilled job openings on file in the state's local employment offices at the end of May were down eight per cent from April 30.
The number of women seeking jobs jumped 16 per cent in May and represented 27 per cent of Ohio job-seekers on May 31. Their proportional representation in the active file has increased steadily since January.
