Full Text

April 25. About six o'clock last evening an affair happened near the Old Slip which should excite the indignation of every Free American.--From what we can learn, a barge, belonging to the French Packet now riding in our river, was returning on shore with several gentlemen of this city, accompanied by some French officers--They were met by a barge of British sailors, who gave an intentional insult, by endeavouring to run against them, which the French gentlemen resented, when a dreadful fray ensued; during which the officers and gentlemen were much hurt by blows received and vollies of stones that were sent from Cruger's wharf by the British ruffians, zealously aided and assisted by the tories; several of whom are noticed, and doubtless will receive a reward suited to the enormity of the crime. In the mean time, a number of whig citizens seized several of the sailors, and had ten committed to jail. Rouse, ye brave Americans, take proper measures to re-sent this daring insult offered our own citizens, and the officers of our great and good Ally.
