The Thyroid Gland. (By Request.)

This won't be a scientific treatise on the thyroid gland but merely the answer to a question of a mother who wanted to know its effect on people.

The thyroid gland is situated in the throat. Everyone is familiar with the disease of goiter which means that the thyroid gland has become enlarged, not only causing marked deformity of the neck but physical changes as well.

During pregnancy the thyroid is more than usually active and is the cause of the usual nervous condition and high strung tension of the prospective mother.

During adolescence many girls have a marked enlargement of the throat causing their mothers much anxiety for fear they are developing goiter. This usually disappears in due time. Diet affects the thyroid gland, in that some districts are known as goiter districts because there are so many persons in that area afflicted with goiters. It has been traced in some places to a deficiency of iodine in the water. Iodine in microscopic doses is the cure for goiter.

There is a well known class of idiots called cretins whose condition is due primarily to a thyroid secretion deficiency. They are retarded in growth, subnormal in intelligence and notable for their chubby appearance.

Doses of thyroid gland makes a decided change for the better in their condition.

Altogether, the thyroid has an effect on growth.
