Full Text
The National Horse Fair at Island Park, Springfield, which commenced Tuesday and closed Saturday night, was one of the most successful exhibitions of the kind ever given in New England. At no time could the attendance have been much less than five thousand persons; and Friday afternoon it was estimated that about twenty thousand visitors were upon the grounds. Trials of speed were more a feature of the fair than at previous exhibitions, and proved, from the large attendance, that the interest centered in them. The Fair was under the management of active liberal men of the city who conducted it in such a manner that no dissatisfaction could exist. The Judges were selected from men of integrity and standing in New England and gave character to the exhibition. Financially it was a success, and a large number of extra premiums were consequently made up after the fair commenced. The show of horses was excellent, both as to character and numbers, and some very good time was made on trials of speed.
