Yule Safety Program is Stepped Up

Christmas in Montgomery County should be safer this year, thanks to an intensive training program in the schools sponsored by the Montgomery County Division of Fire Protection.

The division has sent fire inspectors to all fifth grade classes in the schools, enlisting a corps of junior fire marshals.

These children complete test books and are taught of the danger of many causes of fire in the home. The emphasis recently has been placed on electrical fixtures and the use of candles on Christmas trees.

Successful completion of the courses merited special rings and hats for the junior fire marshals.

The children have been given decorative golden rulers, of cardboard to tie on trees. Printing on the rulers reads:

Check tree lights for frayed wire, loose sockets; keep tree away from radiators or fireplaces; use only fire-resistant decorations; turn off tree lights when you are out; keep gift wrappings and electric trains away from the tree; when needles start to fall, remove the tree from the house.

Adults would do well to heed their children's lessons.
