At an early hour yesterday morning the crowds from the country from afar and near poured into the city to do honor towards celebrating the 123d anniversary of our Independence.
The exercises at the pavilion commenced about 10 a. m. and opened with prayer by Rev. Skipworth. Judge Poe presided and delivered the addresses of welcome in his usual good way.
C. E. Hafsey, in the absence of J. H. Lewis who could not come on account of illness, delivered the oration in a masterly way, which is published verbatim elsewhere. E. C Doyle read the Declaration of Independence. Vineland did her part nobly by furnishing a parade with a Goddess of Liberty, car with a goddess and fifty prettily attired little girls representing our States and Territories.
The sports at Vineland were well attended and enjoyed by all.
J. M. Brown's mare, an unknown, Bonnie Zan, easily defeated Senator Pettigrew in the dash horse race.
The base ball contest between the Lewiston and Vineland teams was won by the former.
Dancing was engaged in at the pavilion by upwards of 100 couples up until midnight. Professor Jones orchestra furnishing the music.
The fireworks, which were displayed on Normal hill, were considered by all to have been the best ever seen here. They were under the direct supervision of J. E Nelson, with the Lewiston Mercantile Co.
It is estimated 10,000 people participated in the celebration.
