The editor of the Truckee Republican has been sued for libel by a fellow named George M. Pinney, who created quite a fluster of excitement some years ago by suddenly disappearing from San Francisco in company with a notorious prostitute named Coster. The idea of libeling such a man as Pinney will strike the average reader as a remarkable feat in journalism. The Republican has been a fearless, independent and able paper and will not take water for an instant on any libel suit which its enemies may bring against it over George Pinney's shoulders. The instant McGlashan heard that a warrant had been issued for his arrest he went to San Francisco and gave himself up. He is ready to answer to the charge of libel; too ready in fact to suit the purposes of the prosecution. Of this suit the Republican says:
This paper has been fearless, honest and outspoken in the past and will not alter its course in the future. George M. Pinney, poor fellow, is not for a moment deemed the real author of the libel suit. Those who are more deeply interested than he in the past course of this paper, doubtless understand why this action is brought. If so, let them know now and forever, that since neither coin, nor influence, nor persuasion, nor flattery could prevent us from exposing their misdeeds, so neither fear, nor law suits, nor persecution shall silence us in the future. If Pinney is to be the stump around which they propose to whip us into submission—so mote it be. They are foemen entirely worthy of our steel, and we are proud to meet them and do them battle.
