FOR THE NORTH CAROLINA STANDARD.

MEETING IN EDGECOMBE.

At a meeting of a portion of the Democratic Republicans of the county of Edgecombe, held at the Court House in Tarborough on Tuesday, 10th of March, 1840—On motion, Jos. Jno. Pippen, Esq. was unanimously called to the Chair and Geo. Howard appointed Secretary.

The object of the meeting having been briefly explained by Gen. I. D. Wilson—

On motion, the Chair appointed Gen. L. D. Wilson, Col. Benja. Sharpe, Maj. Edwin Barnes, Dr. P. Sugg, and Robert D. Hart, a committee to draft resolutions expressive of the object of the meeting; viz:

Resolved, That we have undiminished confidence in the ability and integrity of Martin Van Buren, President of the United States, and that we will with untiring zeal and assiduity endeavor to promote his re-election.

Resolved, That we cordially concur in the proposition to hold a District Convention at Washington, on the 21 Monday of April next, for the purpose of appointing a Delegate to the Republican National Convention to be held in Baltimore in May next, and to select an Elector of President and Vice President on the Republican ticket for this district.

On motion, the following persons were appointed delegates to said District Convention:

Col. B. Sharpe, Wm. S. Baker, Esq., Robert D. Hart, Jos. Jno. Pippen, Esq., Charles G. Hunter, Esq., Lemuel Deberry, Esq., Jesse C. Knight, Esq., C. J. P. Pitt, R. E. Macnair, Maj. E. Alred Gray, Charles W. Knight, Benja. R. Hines, Esq., Dr. P. Sugg, Gen. L. D. Wilson, Capt. Charles Harrison, Wm. E. Bellamy, Gen. Wyatt Moye, and William Norfleet, Esq.

On motion, the thanks of the meeting were tendered to the Chairman and Secretary for the faithful discharge of their duties.

On motion, resolved, that the Editors of the Tarboro' Press, Washington Republican, and Raleigh Standard be requested to publish these proceedings, and the other Democratic papers in the State to copy the same.
