13 Escape
To Death
As 3 Burn

An early morning flash fire
snuffed out the lives of three
persons about 4 a.m. Monday
morning, including a man
and his wife.

Willie Sims, his wife, Pearl,
and Oliver Stewart, believed
to be a roomer in the building,
were found dead by firemen
shortly after the flash fire
was brought under control.

The two-story frame, located
at 1479 Leland, was first noticed
burning shortly after midnight.
Thirteen persons residing in
the building escaped.

Mrs. Gladys White, who resided
in the upper flat, awoke her
children after hearing screams.

Mrs. White's children ranged
in age from 2 to 20 years of age.

Stewart, a roomer on the
same floor with the Johnsons,
was found dead behind a trunk.
