At a respectable meeting of a number of the inhabitants of the eastern part of the township of Huntington, in the county of Suffolk, and state of New-York, held at the house of Amos Willets, in said town, on the third day of January, 1799, for the purpose of taking into consideration the present tumultuous situation of our country, respecting the present administration of government.
Resolved, That Moses Blackly be chairman of this meeting, and that Daniel Kelsey be clerk.
Resolved, That all meetings for deliberating on public affairs ought to be convened by public notice; and as a meeting has lately been held in this town for the said purpose without sufficient public notice having been previously given to the inhabitants thereof, therefore,
Resolved, That we do wholly disapprove of the conduct of said meeting, being fully persuaded the sense of the majority of the people was not taken thereby.
Resolved, That we will support the Constitution of the United States, and the present administration thereof, in opposition to that party spirit, which has for a long time, and still continues to disturb the repose and tarnish the characters of our fellow citizens in many parts of the Union.
Resolved, That when any town passes resolutions derogatory to the character of any public officer, we conceive such resolves to be inflammatory and destructive of our government.
Resolved that Moses Blackly and Amos Willets, be a committee on the part of this meeting, to inculcate the principles contained in the foregoing resolves, and to transmit our proceedings for publication.
