Inquest on A Negro,-Coroner Cotton held an inquest on the body of a negro yesterday evening, who died from want anl exposure in a negro groggery near the foot of Jefferson street, kept by John Sturla. The stench of the place was intolerable, and the jury did not stay long in the room where the body lay in a miserable bunk. All that could be learned about the deceased was, that his name was Aleck, and that he had died from want and exposure. The jury returned a verdict in accordance with the facts, adding the following: "The dead body was found in the third story of a low groggery kept by John Sturla, near the foot of Jefferson street, lying in a bunk fitted up expressly to accommodate the lowest class of negroes that patronize this and other places of the kind in the vicinity. In the rooms on the same floor we found garbage of the filthiest kind, sufficient to produce any disease, which calls loudly for reform." Sturla was arrested by the police and fined fifteen dollars in the Police Court this morning for having his place in such a filthy condition.
