A tuberculosis survey of Itasca county was the outstanding feature of the tuberculosis prevention and health promotion work financed by Christmas Seals during 1930, according to a report of officials issued in connection with the present campaign.
Miss Mabel Johnson, public health nurse of the Minnesota Public Health association conducted this survey, assisted by Miss Alma Pederson, county nurse. They made over 300 home calls in an effort to reach persons throughout the county who had been exposed to tuberculosis and to instruct them on the dangers of contagion through prolonged contact and to invite them to be examined at one of the free clinics held in connection with the survey.
Four clinics were held, at Grand Rapids, Nashwauk, Deer River and Bigfork, with 130 examinations in all.
Tuberculin testing of the children in the Grand Rapids school was another feature of the Christmas Seal work.
An interesting feature of the general health educational work was a Marionette Health show given at the Itasca County fair. Through this show, both adults and children were interested in health and were taught many important health lessons.
Health education was conducted in the schools throughout the county during the year by the Christmas Seal funds. Material including striking posters, illustrating and urging proper health habits and literature on various health subjects were sent to every school at the beginning of the year and "Everybody's Health," publication of the Minnesota Public Health association was sent to each school monthly, providing reliable and valuable health instruction aids for the teacher.
Essential health promotion supplies furnished the schools through the Christmas Seal funds included: health balls, first aid kit, paper towels and paper cups, towel cabinets, cup dispensers, thermometers and reference books.
