This is the fourteenth of a series on the Infantry and Armored Divisions of the new National Guard. They are presented to acquaint you with the organization which will be an M-Day force, trained, equipped and available for immediate service with the Regular Army in the event of any emergency.
39th Infantry Division—Companies and field batteries organized in the South long before the War Between the States make up the old infantry units of the 39th Division of the now National Guard.

In World War I its most of its former or present-day units were in action, seeing combat in both major theaters.
In World War I the 39th was organized at Camp Beauregard, Louisiana, in August of 1917. Arriving in France shortly afterward, it became a replacement division, transferring men to other combat units.
Its four infantry regiments in that conflict were the 153rd and 154th, both from Arkansas, the 155th from Mississippi, and the 156th from Louisiana. The 155th dating back to 1798 when it was organized as the Adams County (Mississippi) Militia, fought in the War of 1812, the Creek Indian War, the Mexican War, and then, as the First Mississippi Volunteers, in the War Between the States.
The 153rd was organized in 1890 as the 1st Infantry, Arkansas State Guard.
During World War II the 154th and 155th fought in the Pacific as part of the 31st Division. The 153rd went to Alaska, and the 156th in European Theater of Operations.
