READY FOR LIFE'S BATTLES
Five Hundred High School Graduates
Receive Their Diplomas.

THOUSANDS OF FRIENDS THERE
Magnificent Sight Presented in Convention Hall-Decorations on an Elaborate Scale.
Hon. W. M. Springer's Address-Music by the Marine Band.

Amid the applause of 5,000 friends, and with the good wishes of principals, teachers, and public, 500 graduates of the Central, Eastern, and Western High schools received their diplomas at Convention hall last evening.

When, a few moments after 8 o'clock, to the music of "Light Cavalry," the pretty young ladies and handsome young gentlemen, all graduates, took their seats on the immense platform, a magnificent sight was presented. The black full-dress suits of the youths formed a solid background, and the white dresses of the young ladies vied with many hundred incandescent lights in adding brilliancy to the scene. The decorations were on an elaborate scale. An immense monogram with the letters "W. H. S., '94,"
worked in blue and white immortelles, and studded here and there with vari-colored electric lights, was suspended from the ceiling. On the platform were seated Commissioners Ross and Truesdell, Superintendent Powell, Principals Lane, Sites, and Westcott, Hon. William M. Springer, and a number of high school teachers.

The Marine band played two introductory selections, and then the graduates marched from the gallery and took their places on the platform as the musicians rendered "The Eastern High School March," composed by Miss Hettie Diver, of the Eastern high School class of '91.

COMMISSIONER ROSS' ADDRESS.

Rev. Rush Shippen invoked the divine blessing, the band played, "In the Clock Store," and then Commissioner Ross made an introductory address.
He characterized the commencement as the annual public school festival. This was the greatest and most memorable of the school days of the graduates. In many cases much sacrifice had been made in order that the boys and girls might secure the advantages of a public school training. Into whatever field of labor they may go they will carry with them the best wishes for success in life.

The "Patrol American" was played by the band and then Hon. William M. Springer, of Illinois, was introduced as the speaker of the evening. In introducing the speaker, Mr. Ross referred to him as one of Washington's most devoted friends in Congress.

"The occasion which calls us together is one of great importance," said Mr. Springer. "It is not merely of local interest. Nowhere in the country has such a spectacle as that now before us been presented to the American people. This is not only a Washington high school. It is the high school of the United States. In it are the sons and daughters of persons from every section of our land."

Commissioner Truesdell presented the diplomas as the graduates' names were called by the several principals.

Then the Marine Band played the "High School March," the commencement was over, and 500 young ladies and gentlemen were no longer members of the Washington high school, but ordinary citizens of the District of Columbia.
