Full Text
The injunction of secrecy which had been laid on the proceedings, during the debates with closed doors, having been taken off, the people of the United States, are gratified to their utmost wish, by learning, that two millions of dollars, in addition to fifteen millions heretofore granted, to purchase the undefined territory of Louisiana, have been voted to propitiate a second purchase of this same land of promise; making the sum of seventeen millions of dollars, which, in less than four years of the present reign of economy, have been granted for the purchase of waste lands; and the greater part of which, to use the words of Mr. Randolph, has passed from the treasury of the United States, "into the pockets of renegadoes, and the bureaus of Paris." The consideration, however, that our title to this territory will be just as good, and our tenure just as certain, after the second as they were after the first purchase, cannot fail to recommend this measure to every thinking citizen; and to secure to our omniscient and magnanimous government, the applause of the world, and the gratitude of the United States!
