WHIG STATE CONVENTION ON WEDNESDAY, THE 20TH OF OCTOBER.
THE WHIG STATE CONVENTION.
The Call for a State Convention of the Whigs of this State is published in the several papers of the party, accompanied with appeals to Whigs in the several towns to see that delegates are appointed, and that all in their power be done to make the approaching convention one the influences of which shall be felt on the March election.
There are towns in this state which are invariably represented in our conventions; and others, which, although the Whigs are there the prevailing party, seem never to be represented in these gatherings of the party; towns, too, conveniently located for an easy attendance, but which, nevertheless, have apparently acquired the habit of staying away.
The present is a season which calls for a full convention; and so the matter is regarded throughout the state. Towns that always send delegates, will this year send representatives, of course; and those that have never sent, will be here by their delegates on the 20th of October.
The Convention, if the weather be favorable, will, it is thought, be one of the fullest delegate Conventions ever held by the Whigs of New-Hampshire. There has been a reason why our Conventions, in other years, were thinly attended; but that cause has passed away. In the past three years the men in our state who refuse to worship the gods of Locofocoism, have made tearing work with the fabric of Radicalism, and further efforts will be attended with further successes. To prepare for the next election, a full Whig Convention is a most desirable object. A political meeting is wanted in which shall be gathered the old and the young heads of the State: a Convention, whose proceedings and debates shall be of a character to impress the people rightly, and give assurance of decisive, energetic labor through the autumn and winter.
This Convention, too, should be one in which time is taken to deliberate upon subjects coming up for decision. Some years, the delegates have not been in session more than two hours; organizing the meeting, and a hasty ballot for candidates for Governor being about all the business transacted. It is agreed all round, that although that might answer in past years, it will not serve our purposes in 1847; and we are desired to renew the request that delegates come to Concord with minds made up to remain through the day at all events, and in the evening, if any way consistent with their avocations at home.
