Today, Oct. 4, is the date designated by President Wilson as a day of prayer in the United States for peace in Europe. In every part of the country, every religious body, Protestant, Catholic, Jew, will observe this day with a unanimity never before witnessed in America. In many instances it has been arranged not only to make the day one of prayers for cessation of the war, but for Christian civilization in all forms of its advance also. Prayers will be offered for wisdom for government and people of the United States, in conduct during the war in Europe. In the time of William of Orange, religious liberty was prayed for, in the time of the American Revolution, freedom was asked by prayer, now those will pray well who pray that military despotism be destroyed, the reign of the sword may be ended, and the reign of conscience and reason may begin.
The American Red Cross has appealed to all religious denominations throughout the country to contribute to the European relief fund in houses of worship Peace Sunday. Many of the churches will give the entire amount collected to this relief work.
The Canadian Council of the Laymen's Missionary movement has endeavored to further throughout the Dominion of Canada the plan of our president, and in nearly all Dominion churches, prayers will be offered at the same time the religious bodies of the United States are praying for peace.
