Full Text
On last Sunday, a suspicious individual, leading a valuable bay horse, came to the U. S. Hotel in this place; had the horse put in the stable and called for breakfast. After which he offered the horse for sale at an amount much below his apparent value, stating that on the evening before, while on a journey, he had purchased him of Mr. Chiswell Osborn who resided on Carroll's Manor. He remained at the Hotel until just after the storm on Sunday afternoon, when he went to the stable, bridled the horse, left without paying his bill: taking with him Mr. Knode's new bridle and leaving his old one in its stead. He was traced to Mr. Shank's Hotel where he was arrested on the information of Ezra Shank, Esq., and committed to jail by Justice Harding, in default of security to appear at Court. On Monday morning, Deputy Sheriff, J. W. McGinnis, of Jefferson county, Va., arrived in this city in pursuit of the stolen property and came forward and identified the horse as the property of Mrs. Hannah Hurst of that county, and the man as Booten Kaufman, under which name he was committed by the Justice. Kaufman will remain in jail until removed under Requisition of the Governor of Virginia. - Frederick (Md.) Examiner.
