Full Text

Daniel Newton was tried last week at Worcester for the murder of Ezekiel Knowlton. After the testimony against him had been given in, the Court instructed the law officer that it did not amount to murder, and the trial then proceeded for manslaughter. The Jury, however, brought in a verdict of not guilty. The death was caused by a single blow from a whip stock, given in sudden anger, but with no reasonable provocation. From the evidence it would appear that juries are inclined to be quite as merciful in Massachusetts, as they are accused of being in Rhode-Island.
