SCHOOL HEAD TERMS BIGOTRY A NATIONAL PERIL

CHICAGO, Feb. 13 (ANP)- The gravity of national racism and intolerance was stressed by Noble J. Puffer, superintendent of Cook County schools, in letters to all schools in the country.

Admitting that he was alarmed at the disturbing outbreak of racial and religious prejudice throughout the United States, particularly in the schools, Puffer urged that the schools and parents stem the rising tide of prejudice.

There seems to be an organized attempt to break down the "spirit of tolerance and fair play so characteristic of America in the past," he said.

He warned that if this evil influence is allowed to develop, it will engulf our whole American way of life and destroy the very thing for which thousands and even hundreds of thousands of our boys have given their lives, their strength and their future to preserve for us.

"The perpetuation of our democracy depends upon our youth understanding early in life the principles of tolerance and justice," he pointed out. "Children, if left alone and free from adult arguments, rarely show racial prejudice early in their school experiences. They are content to play with one another regardless of color of skin, spelling of names or religious references."
