Wind Does Damage.

Detroit, July 27—A severe windstorm did much damage here today. The large Brown hoist, used to lift and carry heavy plates used in shipbuilding, lies on the deck of the Michigan Central car ferry Transport—a total wreck—while the upper works of the ferry are for the most part smashed to kindling.

The Brown hoist is an immense affair which runs on a track 40 feet high and 500 feet long. Just before the storm broke the hoist was safely anchored 400 feet up the track with two chains. The car ferry Transport lay at the dock directly in front of the Brown hoist track. When the storm broke the chains snapped and the immense piece of machinery ran to the end of the track and jumped 30 feet to the car ferry. The loss is $50,000.
