After the Elections
Union members who have been working hard in the election campaign deserve a rest, but a lot of them won't take it.
They see plenty of problems facing the union.
There is the GM contract still hanging fire. The management has stalled successfully for many months.
There is the Ford drive, which will need the time and strength of every member willing to help.
There is the problem of consolidating our strength in the West Side Local, with every steward on his toes, every committeeman functioning at his best, and every member a well developed union man or woman.
We have to get busy on shop problems so the management won't get away with any more speedup and chiseling and discrimination.
There are the union dances and entertainments to be worked up, so that more members will get acquainted and learn to make the Union Hall the center of their social life.
Bowling, basketball and other sports of the winter season need more attention.
All these activities help to build a strong union, prepared to work effectively with the companies if they want to negotiate and adjust grievances, but equally prepared for a showdown if the companies want a fight.
