EL PASO, Texas, Nov. 14. - Telegrams received late tonight here contradict earlier reports and state that the Villa troops have captured Ojinaga, just across the Rio Grande river from Presidio, Texas, and completely defeated the federal garrison at the former place. Villa's troops are said to number at least 5,000 instead of the few hundred which the federals expected to meet.
Following the defeat of the federal forces, unconfirmed reports say that a portion of the bandits succeeded in crossing the border into Texas and that the American commander in the El Paso district has been asked to rush all possible reinforcements to the aid of the American forces near Presidio. This latter report could not be confirmed at a late hour.
The first reports received here this morning stated that the federals had defeated the bandits and were in pursuit of them. It is thought that if the last report is true, Villa led them into a trap and overwhelmed them. This is the opinion of the military authorities here.
EARLY REPORT
PRESIDIO, Texas, Nov. 14. - After fighting for the greater part of the day, the federal garrison at Ojinaga, Mexico, drove off the Villaista forces attacking the town and are following up their victory with a vigorous pursuit in an effort to capture the entire band engaged in the assault. The Villa forces have been besieging the Mexican town, which is just across the river from here, for several days.
The bandits attacked from the south early this morning, and hundreds of their bullets fell across the border in American territory. No Americans were injured by stray bullets.
