McCook's Murder Fearfully Avenged.
From the Cincinnati Times.
A telegrapher who has been on the military line in Northern Alabama reached this city yesterday direct from Athens. He states that the assassination of the gallant McCook was fearfully avenged by the 9th Ohio. Soon after learning the facts their indignation amounted to frenzy, and, raising the cry of revenge, they seized their muskets and ammunition, and breaking through all discipline, dashed forth in parties in pursuit of the murderers.-- The rebel who directed McCook into the ambuscade, and who was arrested soon after the murder, was taken from the guard, hung up between two saplings, and riddled with bullets. The adjoining towns and plantation houses were leveled to the ground, and every male rebel found shot or hung.-- Our informant states that one hundred and thirty-five were known to have been killed, including every rebel sympathiser in a whole neighborhood that fell into the hands of the frenzied Ninth Ohio. He further states that the act had created great terror among the citizen guerrillas of that section, and they were going Southward as fast as they could travel. Fearful as has been the revenge, the troops of the gallant McCook are not yet satisfied. They demand to be led to battle, where, wading through fire and blood, they can make the heartless traitors atone for the murder of the best and noblest plan that ever led regiment to battle.
