MUCH ADO ABOUT NOTHING.

The quid nuncs, and lovers of small talk and scandal of our goodly city, have been agog, for a few days past, at the abrupt disappearance of Mr. Geo. Pomroy, the proprietor of the Pioneer Coffee House; as if there was any thing unusual or strange in a man's absenting himself from town for a few days, without proclaiming to the world his departure, and the object of his leaving.—

Our readers may gather something of the character of the gossip that has grown out of Mr. Pomroy's absence, by reading the following paragraph from the Whig.

MYSTERIOUS DISAPPEARANCE.

A few days ago, George Pomroy, who had for some time past kept a popular Coffee House on Fifth street, suddenly disappeared. As he held large sums of money as stake-holder of numerous bets made upon the election, it was immediately supposed that he had become involved, and had consequently given leg bail, carrying with him the spoils in his hands.

His creditors were therefore called together to consult upon the proper measures to be pursued, but which, we believe resulted in doing nothing. Since the meeting of his creditors, however, we understand that his trunk (left behind) has been broken open by his friends and examined, and to their great surprise, most of his money, papers, and other valuables were found therein. Suspicions are consequently excited, that he has been murdered, and his body secreted.

We hope that all classes of the community will therefore be upon the qui vive to unravel the mystery.

Mr. Pomroy has we are informed, returned to the city. Business called him to the country for a few days. In leaving, however, he omitted to notify Madame Gossip of his intentions. Madame Gossip is an ill natured old vixen. In revenge for the omission of Mr. Pomroy to consult her ladyship, and advise her of his departure, she reported him an absconding debtor, and a swindler; and for a moment her story was partially believed, but not implicitly. Search was made—Mr. Pomroy's trunk was opened—when it was ascertained that there was no foundation for the swindling part of the story. The money said to have been carried away by him, was found deposited in the trunk. The next resort of the old lady was to report him murdered. But unfortunately, the report had scarcely gone forth, when the object of so much speculation and mystery made his appearance. We advise Mr. Pomroy, the next time he purposes leaving the city, no matter for what purpose, or what length of time, to give notice of his intentions in the Whig, or some other widely circulated paper.
