From the Providence Patriot.
Our little territory is at length invaded. The President, anticipating this event, immediately upon the Declaration of War, called upon "His Excellency" for the State's quota of militia—not, as has been basely represented, for the purpose of invading Canada—but to defend our own homes and firesides. "His Excellency," true to the spirit that pervades the federal faction, absolutely refused to comply with this constitutional request: and it cannot be expected that the President will so degrade the dignity of the United States, as to make a second requisition. Had the militia been ordered out in compliance with this requisition, all the expenses consequent thereon would have been defrayed by the U. States: Whatever burdens are now imposed, must be borne by this State alone.
We have hitherto trusted to our Loyalty as the shield that would protect us—but we now begin to fear that we have been deceived. From its local situation 'tis said, the Northern section of the State has no immediate danger to apprehend—as yet we securely repose under our own vines and fig trees with none to make us afraid.' We should however remember the enemy may come 'like a thief in the night;' the federal prints take especial care to warn us of our supineness; and we may, when we least expect it, 'see the blaze of our dwellings glitter on the darkness of midnight.'
Our brethren in Newport are justly alarmed at their peculiarly exposed situation: they know they are liable to be driven from all that is dear to them by a comparatively insignificant foe. One thing appears certain—they must rely on their own valor for protection "His Excellency" and his Peace Council are not sensible of their danger—or if sensible of it, do not think them of consequence enough to attend to.
It is really time this contemptible electioneering policy was abolished—Let the militia be ordered out—If they are not wanted on the northern, post them on the southern frontier. Although the federalists possess all the wealth of the community, 'we pledge ourselves to contribute our mite with a cheerful heart. We wish our southern brethren to repose as securely as we do.
