Adjustment of grievances has at no time been very satisfactory in this plant and the accumulative bitterness engendered by the mounting pile of unsettled grievances has brought about a situation that may prove serious. There is a tendency to airily set aside certain clauses of the agreement as being of no consequence, which is deeply resented by the membership.
CONFERENCE POSTPONED
J. L. Cohen, UAW counsel, and C. H. Millard, Canadian regional director, were present at a conference between the local management and the shop committee last Saturday and, while some minor grievances were well under way towards settlement, a disagreement on a major issue caused an indefinite postponement of the conference.
The attempt by the management to increase volume of production without an agreement being reached with the shop committee, and consequently in contravention of one clause of the agreement, has resulted in strengthening the determination of the men that the rate of production agreed upon previously shall be strictly adhered to.
