The ship Experiment sailed from this port on Sunday morning, for Montego Bay, to take in a part of her cargo for New York: at 2 P. M., when about six miles to leeward of the harbor, a sloop privateer was observed in chase of her under Spanish colors, gaining upon her so fast that captain Moncreff finding it impossible to escape, hoisted his American colors and hove to, so near the shore that we could see the boat from the privateer full of men, board and take possession of her; after which they made all sail to the northward, the privateer keeping ahead a little to windward of the Experiment. At this time there was a ship in sight, coming down before the wind, directly for this port, and which fortunately proved to be his majesty's sloop Wolf; the signal was made at the north battery for an enemy to leeward, was answered by her, and all sail immediately made after the ship and privateer; at this time the enemy had not been in possession of the Experiment more than fifteen minutes. We have the pleasure to state that the man of war was soon up with that ship, retook her, with ten of the privateersmen on board: after which she chased the privateer on shore, a little to leeward of Little River, where she is reported to have gone to pieces, and the remainder of her crew taken prisoners and marched to Montego Bay. This marauder had been out from Cuba only three days and taken nothing.
The Wolf conveyed the Experiment into port yesterday.
