The Western Elections still continue to be the theme of many sage speculations and strange calculations in the Jackson papers. They appear extremely unwilling to acknowledge that their party has lost strength, and try every means to avoid the appearance of a general defeat, while on the other hand the friends of Mr. Clay declare with great earnestness that such is the result, and that all the swaggering on the part of their opponents is intended for effect in Maryland and other states where elections are about to be held.

The Jackson folks, for instance—conceding that they are too weak of themselves—in order to make up the number of members in the Kentucky legislature sufficient to elect a Jackson man of their own stamp, pretend to claim some six or eight of the friends of Clay who, they say, are pledged to vote with them!—pledged to vote contrary to their own feelings and wishes!—pledged to vote against the very man they desire to have elected! In a few weeks the legislature will meet, and then, as the Richmond Enquirer says, "we shall see what we shall see."

In Indiana, the friends of Clay have succeeded in electing to the Senate 18 members, to the House 33—total 51. The Jackson folks have in the Senate 10, in the House 23—total 33. Majority for Clay in joint ballot 18.

In Mississippi, the election of Representative to Congress has just been completed. There were six candidates supported. Returns from all the counties but six have been received, from which it appears that Mr. Plummer has a considerable majority, and doubtless is elected. He is a Jackson man, but owes his election to the friends of Mr. Clay, who united upon him to prevent the election of Mr. Wilkins, a thorough going state-rights, anti-tariff, and "nullifying" candidate, and by eminence the Jackson candidate.

We subjoin the two following brief articles:

"The Campbells are coming!"—It is now clearly ascertained that Louisiana, Missouri, Illinois, Indiana and Kentucky have proclaimed in favor of HENRY CLAY. And the people of Ohio, Maryland and New Jersey are already moving onwards in the same line of duty and patriotism, and will proclaim their decided opposition to Jacksonism at the election in October next. In New-York too the Bourbons are trembling, notwithstanding the presence of Polignac (Van Buren) to drill the Herkimer Convention.—N. Y. Spec.

The returns of the Elections in Illinois for Governor, are published in the Vandalia Intelligencer of the 21st ult. and give the following result—For Reynolds, Il. 6,068—for Kinney, G., 1,930. Majority for Reynolds 4,138.

The Intelligencer contains also some of the returns of the elections to the Legislature, but says not a word of their political complexion, which, as the Intelligencer has been a Jackson paper, may be taken for an omen of ill to that party.

The friends of the American System and its founder and champion HENRY CLAY, have triumphed in Kentucky, Indiana, and Louisiana, by the actual returns of the votes. In Missouri, although the numbers are not fully ascertained, the most respectable papers of that State inform us that the re-election of Mr. Barton to the U. States Senate, is as certain as any event can be. In the absence of complete returns from Illinois, we have had repeated assurances that a majority of the Legislature of that State is in favor of the same system, and the same candidate.

Thus far, therefore, the triumph of principle has been complete. The past is full of the happiest promise of the future. "Thanks be to God (to quote from the excellent address of Mr. Cox, at our 4th of July dinner) a brilliant stream of glory is perceived gleaming along the Western heavens—which is diffusing its brilliancy and its light, wherever the eye can rest."—Nat. Jour.
