Illinois Jobless Benefits Show Sharp Increase
Chicago (ILNS).-While jobless insurance benefits in June were 25 per cent below payments in the same month last year, they increased 7 per cent over May figures, State Director of Labor Francis B. Murphy stated.
June's total payments to 11,259 workers were $755,921, compared with $705,588 during May to 10,524 eligible claimants.
"The increase was uniform for Chicago and downstate areas," Murphy said. "The areas most affected by current unemployment include Montgomery and Macoupin counties and the territory south of the Kentucky border. Analysis of the causes of unemployment show a marked increase in layoffs due to cutbacks and cancellation of war contracts."
