Perkins Says Costs Climb
Washington, July 31-AP--Secretary of Labor Perkins said today the cost of living of city families increased two tenths of one per cent between mid-May and mid-June.
The advance, measured by the Bureau of Labor Statistics Index, reflected a climb in the retail prices of all principal budget items except rent, fuel, electricity and ice, the secretary reported. Other findings:
Food prices were up 0.1 per cent attributed chiefly to seasonal increases for eggs and some fresh fruits and vegetables, particularly white potatoes, sweet potatoes, oranges and apples. (However, the May-June level was still 4.4 per cent below average food prices in June, 1943, Miss Perkins said.)
Prices for house furnishings advanced 2.5 per cent, clothing prices were up 0.4 per cent, while the price of miscellaneous goods and services rose 0.3 per cent.
Miss Perkins said that on the average prices charged moderate income city families for essential living items have shown comparatively little change during the last year, that prices measured by the BLS index were 0.5 per cent higher in June of this year than in the same month of last year.
But the new index showed a rise of 27.2 per cent above the level of these costs in August, 1939, the month preceding outbreak of the war in Europe.
