Several Counties and Many Villages Laid Waste by the Merciless Winds.
DEATH ROLL WILL REACH FULLY 120
Many Persons Suffer Shocking Injuries -- Immense Property Loss -- Ruin Wrought in Kansas and Missouri by Hail and Floods.
Justin, Tex., May 16 -- W. J. Evans was killed here by a cyclone to-day and seventeen wounded. The most severely injured are: M. Wilson, wife and children, and Ed. R. Reynolds.
At Gribble Springs, three persons were killed and thirty injured. The dead are: Mrs. Shannon and a small child, and Mr. Hill, a young man. Mr. Hurst and family are severely injured. It is expected that two of them will die. One child was found with a large wooden splinter stuck through its head, but it was still living. At Gribble Springs a few houses remain.
Keller, a small town north of Justin, was almost entirely wrecked. Only one house is standing. All the country immediately north was left bare by the storm.
DEATH AND DESTRUCTION.
Denton, Texas. - The cyclone, which cut out the heart of this county and Grayson county, just to the northeast, started within a mile of Justin. A terrific wind was experienced here. Houses were demolished and farm buildings completely removed. Reports from the country districts indicate that five people were killed, most of whom were traders in Denton, but whose names can not be ascertained at this time. So far no one has been reported killed in this town. Reports from Justin, Sherman and Gribble are to the effect that $500,000 worth of property has been destroyed in the two counties. At Carpenter Bluff, seven miles from here, the dwelling of John Devant was blown down and Devant and wife, Devant's hired man, named Armour, and a little child, received injuries from which they will die.
SHERMAN SUFFERED BADLY.
Sherman, Tex.--When the first blast of the cyclone was felt at Justin, Denton county, more than 100 miles from Sherman, men, women and children were wholly unprepared for it. From there the cyclone went northeast through Gerald and Denton, thence to Mingo, Gribble Springs and on to Mustang. Hundreds of miles were traveled in an hour. Small settlements along the Missouri Kansas & Texas railroad, north of Denton, all suffered. Elmview was lashed; then the village of Howe was assailed. The southwest end of Sherman received the full force of the storm, which, while sweeping over Denton county and part of Grayson, seemed to have gathered new fury and wreaked the worst of its ruins in this city.
