WHO WILL BE GOVERNOR?

This query is the caption of an editorial in the Opelousas Clarion of recent date and in "a review of the political situation," says:

"It may be said that the State campaign has fairly opened--that is, as far as the governorship is concerned. The mass meeting held at Shreveport at which the candidacy of Judge Newton C. Blanchard was launched, may be considered as the first gun of the campaign, the command to "right dress," and the politicians throughout the country now have "head erect eyes to the right"

Mr. Blanchard will prove a strong candidate. He is an able man, honest, Democrat to the backbone--and thoroughly identified with the interests and needs of the state. And then it is said that he has the sympathy of the administration, and we will not be gainsaid when we remark that this is quite an item in his favor.

"But there are other equally as deserving gentlemen who would like to spit tobacco juice in Heard's cuspidor for four years.

"For instance, there is gallant Bob Broussard, the Cajun Congressman from the Third district. Bob has a host of friends in the state, and if he announces himself as a candidate for the chief magistracy of Le Belle Louisiana he will prove a right hard pony to curry.

And there is Honest Lawrason, the man who acts from convictions, no matter whom it hurts (just so it doesn't hurt the Democratic party and the supremacy of the white man). He is prominently mentioned. But he is one of the few that will await "the earnest solicitations of friends' before announcing his candidacy. He will not rush the office.

Secretary Michel is also mentioned and he will be a formidable candidate if he runs is bound to be admitted. It is to be presumed that he would get a good majority of the New Orleans delegation which is a nice nucleus of itself. In fact it is claimed that he will carry every delegate but two from the city. Michel has been one of the "boys" within the democratic trenches in the Crescent city for years. He has always stood by the old party flag and fought everything that was not strictly Democratic. It is believed that Michel will be New Orleans candidate for governor.

Gen. Leon Jastremski is also a talked of probability. He is principally being urged forward by his brothers of the press of the state. He is at present private secretary to the governor. The general is a ripe old statesman and a clean man, and would make an excellent governor.

St. Mary, the Virginia of Louisiana, of course has a candidate in the field, and a good one at that. Jared Sanders, able, brave, true as steel, a Democrat all over, one of those scrapping Democrats that is to be reckoned with in the coming race. He is speaker of the House of Representatives. We are told that he has been tendered the lieutenant governorship but declined.

the present governor can not succeed himself and it is said that he has an eye on Senator McEnery's place at Washington.

Ex-Congressman Price, Justice J. A. Breazeale, Bob Snyder, Mayor Capdeville, Gen. Turner and others of more or less prominence are being spoken of for the high office.

So it will be seen that there is a splendid field to pick from, splendid both in point of capacity and Democratic service"

And the Caucasian would add there are others, others who may venture in the field if the nomination is by primary election but only a limited few will tackle the machine.

Who will be governor? If the decision is left to the Democrats who vote doubtless the best and most popular of the candidates will be the man, but if it is to the manipulation of the "cut and dried convention the Democrats, who vote will be expected to endorse the man who (if not already selected) will be dictated by the machine. Will the Democrats who vote and carry elections yield passively, bow the neck and cringe the knee to the few who would dominate in Louisiana?

Hon. Leon Jastremski, in an open letter has invited all the candidates for governor to join him in urging on the Central committee the adoption of primaries for the nomination instead of convention. Mr. Jastremski should not forget that some men are willing to fight the machine if it be against them but pool their favor the machine if it be for

their benefit. Mr. Jastremski's sunshine with
