Parents of children who will start their first year of school next September are especially urged to send their tots to summer fun programs at school playgrounds.
Horace O'Bryant, superintendent and Mrs. Edith Roberts, coordinator of instruction of Monroe County Schools, said the half day summer "kindergarten program is especially valuable to five-and six year - old boys and girls who haven't had any school experience.
The kindergarten programs, at Poinciana and Reynolds schools, are part of the school system's big summer recreation program which starts Monday, June 17.
Parents can choose whether they'd rather send their youngster to morning or afternoon sessions.
"A child starting school is like a grownup starting his first job,' O'Bryant explained. 'It's confusing to the child, at first, if he hasn't learned to get along with other youngsters. The summer fun program will give him a chance to get his feet on the ground, socially, before it's time to start his studies; and he'll feel more at home with other children in the classroom on his first day of school - and afterwards."
The all - day programs for older elementary school children at Poinciana, Truman and Harris schools include a 9 a. m. to 4 p. m. schedule of games, arts and crafts, sports and trips to the beach.
Some special programs for older teenagers will be carried on at Memorial Junior High and Key West High Schools.
Youngsters interested in joining the playground groups can ask about them at the school they usually attend starting next Monday. Registration opens at 9 a. m.
All the playground programs are free of charge. Teachers supervise the youngsters; and children who join are not obligated to stay with the group all summer. They may drop out at will.
