LONDON-(ANP)-Haile Selassie will retain his claim to the throne of Ethiopia and will neither move from England to the continent or permit himself to become a pawn in bargaining between Great Britain and Italy, the Ethiopian legation has officially announced.
The emperor has obliged his hosts by withholding publication of his memoirs but he is too cagey to destroy his usefulness or strategic position by surrendering his right to the crown. He asserted Monday, in a statement aimed at the league of nations, that he has not lost trust in it despite its failure to save his kingdom and believes "the independence of his country will ultimately be obtained with the help of the league."
The league meets next month and it is known that certain British diplomats are hunting ways and means of ousting Ethiopia.
The diplomatic correspondent of the Daily Telegraph, who frequently reflects the policies of Foreign Secretary Anthony Eden, asks Britain and France to consider asking the league not to honor any delegate appointed by Selassie as a representative of the Ethiopian government "which for more than a year has had no actual existence"
However, although many British officials favor recognition of the Italian conquest of Ethiopia, they are in favor of Selassie retaining his imperial claim, and it is believed in some quarters that he may be given a pension by Britain.
If Selassie retains his claim to the crown, Britain, in the advent of Italian threats to her interests, might encourage native revolts in East Africa to restore Selassie to his throne. Obviously, retention of such claims is essential to this possible strategy.
