Made
an Overland Trip
to Texas.

A solemn looking mule passed through
Sedalia yesterday, surmounted by a lot
of sacks and bed clothes, on top of which
was seated a man well along in years.
From one side of the mule hung a black,
greasy skillet, while on the other hung
a small coffee pot, black with age and
smoke.
And the man had a double barreled
shot gun.
A reporter followed along the street un-
til the stranger stopped to buy some crack-
ers, when it was learned that the man
was
Henry Carpenter, aged fifty-six years and
raised in Cooper county.
Last autumn Carpenter left Cooper
county on the mule, and rode to Texas,
make the journey in about six weeks.
Not liking the country, he turned his face
northward, leaving Corsicana on February
13, last, and had been traveling nearly all
the time since, reaching here yesterday.
During the trip he had slept most of the
time in the open air, he said, and his ap-
pearance indicated as much.
In answer to inquiries, he told the re-
porter that he intended to go to Montana
this summer. He should not stay long in
Cooper.
"Will you take the mule with you?"
asked the reporter.
No, I shall not ride him there," he
said, "but he has been a very faithful
animal to me," he replied.
And the solemn mule and the eccentric
man jogged along toward Cooper county.
