Poetry.
The Prophecy of Nahum.
BY THOMAS OAKS CONANT
'Woe, woe to the bloody city!' Jehovah's voice proclaims;
'Long have I borne thy wickedness, endured thy wanton shames.
Thy streets are filled with rioting, and heaped with glory slain:
The horsemen, wielding sword and spear, discordant war maintain."
Take ye the spoils of silver, take ye the spoil of gold!
For endless store of glorious things her op'ning gates unfold!
But void shall be the city, and silent all her ways,
For God, abhorrent of her pride, her towering walls shall ravish.
Laid waste is lordly Nineveh! Ah, who shall comfort now,
Bemoaning that the coronal is ravished from her brow;
Her wickedness hath made her toss like sands upon the shores;
Her palaces forgot shall be, her glories known no more.
But see! upon the mountain cries the messenger of peace.
Glad tidings brings of glorious good, that Israel's woes shall cease!
O Judah! keep thy solemn feasts, perform thy sacred vows!
For God shall break the heavy yoke thy sorrowing head that bows.
