ATLANTA Seven additional colored policemen have been added to Atlanta's Police Department, giving the city a total of 42 colored officers, according to Superintendent J. L. Tuggle, in charge of the officer training program.
Superintendent Tuggle stated that the new recruits will undergo an extensive five-week training program before graduation from school.
On March 8, 1948, Atlanta's first eight colored patrolmen were sworn in as officers, and worker from the Butler Street YMCA.
Presently, there are four colored detectives and one sergeant, with 37 patrolmen working from the police station on Decatur St.
The new patrolmen were identified as: Eugene Bell, McHenry Brown, Alexander Chivers, W. F. Collier, J. J. Early, W. W. Hargrove Jr. and J. B. Phillips.
