Full Text

The following LINES were composed by a SERVANT
Maid, nearly a Century since.

Says Faith, "Look yonder, see the crown
Laid up in Heaven above."
Says Hope, Anon it shall be mine;
"I long to wear't," says Love.
Desire saith, "What! is there my crown?
Then to that place I'll flee;
I cannot bear a longer stay,
My rest I fain would see."

"But stay," says Patience, "wait awhile,
The crown's for those that fight:
The prize for those that run the race,
By faith and not by sight."

Thus Faith doth take a pleasing view,
Hope waits, Love sits and sings,
Desire, she flutters to be gone,
But Patience clips her wings.
