ADDRESS TO THE PRESIDENT.
In pursuance of the previous notice, a respectable assemblage of the citizens of Baltimore convened, last evening, at the Long Room of Mr. Barney. Edward Johnson, Esq. Mayor of the City, was called to the chair; and TheodoricK BLAND, Esq. appointed Secretary.
The meeting was opened by William Pinkney, Esq. with his usual ability and eloquence. He took a rapid glance at the causes and progress of the war; paid a proper tribute to the firmness and talent displayed by the Chief Magistrate, under the most trying difficulties, and encountering a most unprecedented opposition; and, with force and eloquence, alluded to the devoted patriotism which Baltimore had uniformly manifested, as well precedent to the war, as during its heaviest pressure.— He vindicated the propriety of such expressions of public approbation, and anticipated the favorable impressions, which such a testimonial of attachment might make on the mind of the distinguished functionary, to whom it would be paid. His speech was received with the applause naturally elicited by enlightened patriotism and polished eloquence.
A committee of fifteen citizens, of which Mr. Pinkney was chairman, was then appointed to prepare a suitable address; who retired; and on their return, reported a draft, which was received with warm applause, and adopted with unanimous approbation. Our readers will hereafter have an opportunity to peruse this neat address, which certainly does great honor to the classical pen, which produced it.
